Committee tables athletic‑handbook changes after members raise bus‑policy and hazing concerns

The Smithfield School Committee on Nov. 20 tabled proposed updates to the student athletic and coach handbooks after members said some provisions — notably a rule that would require 24‑hour notice and athletic director approval for a student to leave a sporting event without the bus — were impractical.

An athletic director presenting the update said the current packet mostly refreshed contact information and links. A committee member objected to the 24‑hour requirement, saying it would force parents and coaches into an unnecessary administrative step for routine departures. The committee member argued that "if a parent is there and approves it, they should be able to ... not call in the athletic director or have 24‑hour notice." The transcript records that the athletic director said enforcement and coach evaluations are handled case by case and that there have been no formal notifications received in the director’s two years in the role.

Committee members also asked that the handbook process include explicit discussion of hazing and bullying at pre‑season team meetings so expectations are emphasized to coaches, students and parents. One member asked that the language require an actual oral meeting to review expectations rather than simply posting the handbook online.

The chair said Glenn, the principal and staff would meet to draft suggested revisions and return the handbook item for committee consideration at a future meeting. A motion to table was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
