Commission continues Vertical Bridge telecom permit to May 11 while variance proceeds

The Pennington County Planning Commission voted April 13 to continue a telecommunication facility permit for a proposed Vertical Bridge tower to its May 11 meeting while the applicants pursue a variance at the county Board of Adjustment.
Senior planner Cody Sack presented COTCP 26-0001, describing the proposal as a telecommunications tower and equipment shelter on a 27.9-acre parcel at 12089 Deerfield Road. Staff determined the proposed tower would not meet the 500-foot setback requirement to a neighboring parcel zoned agriculture and under 40 acres, so the applicants have applied for a setback variance to be heard by the Board of Adjustment on May 5, 2026.
Commissioners asked about the proposed tower height; Sack said the applicants’ materials differ slightly and the height will be clarified before the May meeting. "One sheet says 195 and one says 199. So at most it'll be 199. I got to clarify that," Cody Sack said.
A motion to continue the permit to the Planning Commission's May 11, 2026 meeting (with no new conditions) was moved, seconded, and approved by voice vote so the variance can be resolved at the Board of Adjustment hearing first.
