The Belle Vernon Area School District board reviewed two curriculum and staff-training purchases at its April 14 work session.
The board heard a recommendation to approve a districtwide subscription to Vector Solutions, described by the meeting chair as "an online training compliance and performance data warehouse" that offers more than 500 courses and would allow the district to assign trainings ranging from coaches' compliance to mandated reporter refreshers. The chair said the platform would shorten the district's mandated reporter module from six hours to three and estimated the annual cost at about $6,000, with unlimited access for roughly 306 full-time staff plus 60–70 coaches.
Board members asked whether the district would duplicate services available through the intermediate unit or the PLAY professional-learning offerings. Dr. Blasby and other presenters clarified that some trainings are newly mandated—structured literacy training was cited as a six-and-a-half-hour state requirement not yet delivered—and that the district expects roughly 300 employees to complete certain mandated trainings before the start of the school year.
Separately, the board was presented with a recommended purchase for McGraill primary research materials from Wonders for grades 3 through 6. The chair said the proposal would cost $186,000 over five years and noted the materials were piloted and presented to the board prior to the recommendation.
District staff said the solicitor will review contract language for the Vector Solutions agreement and that further questions should be directed to the business office before any approval. No formal vote on either purchase is recorded in the work-session transcript; board members were asked to review the materials and raise questions or concerns prior to a future action item.
The board is expected to place vendor contracts and curriculum purchases on a future meeting agenda for formal action after solicitor review and any additional questions from members.
