John Jay Science Olympiad team recognized for regional and state medals

Students and coaches from John Jay High School presented highlights from their Science Olympiad season, reporting regional and state placements and thanking the district for support.
The Wappingers Central School District board on April 13 heard a recognition of the John Jay High School Science Olympiad team. Superintendent Dr. Bonk introduced the group and called out the team’s achievements before coach Ian Friedman and student officers outlined this year’s events and results.
Coach Ian Friedman thanked the district and introduced student leaders and event participants. Students described a mix of knowledge-based and build events, noting recent in-person competitions at Columbia University, Cornell and Sacred Heart and medal finishes at regionals and states. The team reported that their A team finished first at the Mid-Hudson regional competition for the fourth consecutive year and that at states they placed eighth among the teams that advanced.
Students identified their events (for example, entomology, chemistry lab, helicopter and remote sensing) and described typical preparation: study sessions for knowledge events and impoundment rules for build events. The team members expressed appreciation for district support that allows B and C teams to compete.
The board and superintendent thanked the students and coaches for representing John Jay High School and the district.
