Edison launches 'America's 250 Edison' with student reenactments and historical programming

The Edison Township Council opened its Jan. 12 work session by announcing "America's 250 Edison," a yearlong slate of events tied to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Council President Coyle said the township’s Rev250 committee — a mix of township staff and historic-community leaders including Walter Stoell — has planned events for the entire community, ranging from enhanced Memorial Day and Fourth of July programs to trolley rides to historic sites and a series of historical minutes to air on Edison TV. The council said it will prepare a Rev250 resolution and a proclamation and place a 250 flag at the municipal circle and at council chambers.
Students from Edison High School’s drama class presented a short reenactment of life in 1776; two participants introduced themselves as Hannah Parker and Joseph Renan in character and recounted Revolutionary-era experiences. Council members repeatedly praised the students and thanked volunteers and the mayor and administration for supporting the initiative.
Council members noted a Rev250 page will be posted online (a council member referenced roberkentos.com) to list events and that the township will coordinate activities with local historic societies. No formal votes were taken during the ceremonial portion.
