City offers expedited curbside collection for student move-outs; donors encouraged to accept usable items

City staff described move-out logistics and options for students clearing apartments at the end of the academic year.

David Hatfield, speaking for the city, said the city no longer places roll-off containers but will provide expedited curbside collection for student move-outs between May 1 and July 31 if residents call Solid Waste at 545-3800. "Between May 1st and July 31st, if they call Solid Waste at 545-3800, they'll let them know they're going to put a bunch of stuff out on the street," Hatfield said.

Hatfield listed common items Solid Waste will pick up and encouraged reuse and donation where possible: clothing, shoes, kitchen items, furniture, bedding, storage bins, artwork, small hardware and bulky plastics such as coolers and buckets. He said Solid Waste aims to remove curbside material within 24 to 48 hours.

For questions about rental properties and potential code violations, Hatfield advised students and families to inspect units before signing leases and to call Code Enforcement at 545-3430 for guidance. The city also provided door-hanger materials and outreach resources campuses can distribute to students about move-in/move-out expectations.

Participants suggested donor partners including Goodwill, All Souls donations and the Cooperative Ministry, and discussed establishing centralized or multiple local drop-off points to aggregate reusable items from students.
