Central York SD to accelerate counseling curriculum revision to emphasize career and workforce standards

Director Oliver told the Central York School District curriculum committee that the district will revise its school counseling curriculum to align with updated career and education workforce standards and accelerate the review cycle to make changes available beginning next school year. "On the five‑year cycle we were anticipating doing that next year but because of the new standards we're going to bump that up a year," the director said.

The presenter said the team will update the counseling maps and the evidence aligned to each strand and will bring those revised maps to the committee in June for review. The update is intended to increase emphasis on career and workforce readiness while retaining existing supports: "we're not looking to do a major rewrite at this point," the presenter said, adding the team will streamline materials and highlight key elements for committee review.

A committee member asked whether the curriculum revisions would require changes to the district’s recently adopted suicide prevention policy. The presenter replied the counseling and health curricula already incorporate mental‑health awareness at varying grade levels and that the suicide prevention policy will be reviewed as part of the update; however, no major policy rewrite is expected.

The committee did not take any formal action at the meeting. The district said the updated counseling maps and supporting materials will be available to the committee in June, and implementation is slated to be in place for pre‑K in the next school year.
