Lee County reviews updates to food‑services policy to meet state and USDA nutrition rules

Dr. David Sims explained the policy changes: "All food and beverages sold during the school day must meet the Smart Snack standards," and the revisions clarify a limited set of fundraiser exemptions allowed under state rules, establish documentation and approval expectations for allowable food sales, and designate a district wellness coordinator and wellness committee to oversee daily operations and policy compliance. Administrators said regulation E‑R1 would provide administrative guidance for districts participating in the federal meal program, setting procedures for oversight, stakeholder involvement, nutrition standards, marketing and periodic assessment and public reporting of the food program. The updates are presented as a 30‑day review item on the consent agenda.
Board members asked whether concession stands and off‑hours fundraising would be restricted. Presenters clarified that the policy focuses on food sold during the school day and that concession sales outside school hours do not compete with the school lunch program and are treated differently.
The proposed policy changes and the linked regulation will be available for the 30‑day review period before the board returns to consider final adoption.
