Westerville City School Board honors National Merit finalists, athletes and A+ award winners

The Westerville City School Board opened its April 6 meeting by recognizing students and staff for academic, athletic and service achievements.
Board member Mrs. Valentine called forward the district’s National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, noting the group is among the top 1% of seniors nationwide and that semifinalists advance to compete for scholarships totaling about $26 million. She congratulated students from Westerville North and Westerville South and acknowledged assistant principal Stephanie McGeorge and family members in the audience.
The board also honored student athletes who placed at state championships, including AJ Keer (sixth in boys diving at the OHSAA meet in Canton) and multiple Westerville Central and Westerville North track-and-field state placers, and acknowledged coaches and athletic directors in attendance.
Becky Yanni introduced the spring A+ awards, which recognize employees who ‘‘go above and beyond’’ to serve students. Recipients included classroom teachers, instructional aides, a bus driver and technology staff cited in nomination excerpts read aloud by Yanni and district presenters. Winners named during the meeting included Libby Bouchong (Mark Twain), Elizabeth Moore (Wilder Elementary), Emily Scott (Mark Twain instructional aide), Travis Tuck (Huber Ridge instructional aide), Drew Farrell (district educational technology integration coach), Kelly Calhoun (Mark Twain), Kelly Worth (Genoa Middle), Denise Eblin (Hawthorne clerk), Takala/Takwela Russell (Minerva France cafeteria/recess aid) and Mary Rebecca Fortman (Amherst music teacher). The board asked staff to ensure absent honorees receive their awards.
Why it matters: The recognitions give the board a regular opportunity to highlight student achievement and staff contributions districtwide, and to call attention to community and foundation support for awards and scholarships.
The meeting moved from recognitions into routine reports and business items, including financial and personnel approvals.
