Middletown hires Transpark for bus‑route review as district looks for efficiencies

The Middletown School Committee voted April 16 to engage Transpark, an outside consultant, to review the district’s current school bus routes, routing efficiencies and start/stop scheduling ahead of planned building reconfigurations.
"Transportation is one of our major expenses in this district," the superintendent said as he introduced the proposal and described the review as a chance to plan for new school configurations and to evaluate start‑ and end‑times. The committee approved the engagement; the superintendent said the work is partially reimbursable under the school building project.
A committee member raised safety concerns for neighborhoods on the town’s east side, noting a lack of sidewalks and narrow, curved roads where students sometimes walk to bus stops in winter. "When they're looking at these kinds of things, they need to realize that you have students with mounds of snow for weeks at a time trying to walk down narrow streets with curves and high‑speed people traffic," the member said. The superintendent and others said the third‑party review will include road and safety considerations.
The meeting did not record a detailed timetable for contracting with Transpark or an estimated cost; the superintendent said the team will report back after the review.
