The Town Commission of the Town of Oakland announced a $100,000 contribution from Healthy West Orange to support a local trail program that will connect the Longleaf area to the main West Orange Trail, Commissioner McLain said at the April 14 meeting.
Commissioner McLain said the donation will advance the town’s plan to build an internal trail network that links neighborhoods to regional trails. “They did us $100,000 towards [the] trail program that will connect in with Longleaf and then run through to connect into the main trail,” McLain said, urging the town to maintain strong relationships with Healthy West Orange to keep the project moving.
Town officials said the grant is part of a broader effort to develop an internal trail system. McLain noted Mike Parker’s role in trail planning and called the Healthy West Orange partnership important for future projects. The commission discussed the need to evaluate off-trail connectivity from neighborhoods and island areas into the trail system so residents can access the new routes.
No formal vote was taken on project design or expenditure at the April 14 meeting. Town staff and commissioners indicated further planning and coordination will be required, including mapping routes and identifying timelines and matching funding sources.
Votes at a glance: The commission approved the consent agenda by voice vote, which included meeting minutes, several agreement amendments with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, a contract with West Tree Services LLC, a sole-source purchase of Kamstrup water meters and the disposal of obsolete computer items. Two Appearance Review Board members were sworn in during the meeting.
The town manager said the commission should expect additional related items on future agendas as staff refines project lists, identifies potential funding matches and coordinates with regional partners.
