La Mesa — The City Council on April 14 directed staff to prepare an ordinance clarifying how cannabis dispensaries may identify themselves on external signage, a move councilmembers said would reduce customer confusion with other storefronts.
Vice Mayor Casarus described complaints from parents and operators who said some dispensary names and storefront designs — for example a business named “Cookies” near El Pollo Loco — were confusing to shoppers and could lead minors to mistake dispensaries for ordinary retail or food businesses. She asked staff to return with an ordinance that would let dispensaries clearly indicate they are such on signage, while not requiring any business to change its existing signage.
Councilmembers said the change was intended to improve public safety and transparency without imposing mandatory costs. Councilmember Suzuki said the policy is optional and business‑friendly: “It would not cost them any money if they didn’t want to do so. It’s ultimately up to them.”
Council voted unanimously to direct staff to bring a proposed ordinance for consideration.
