Sun City West reports emergency Desert Trails well repair, cost about $109,000

The governing board was briefed on Feb. 13 about an emergency repair at the Desert Trails irrigation well that staff said dated to 1937 and showed declining pumping performance.
CFO Cliff Swan explained that diagnostics showed the well was not producing the expected flow and that the pump and piping required repair. "It was approximately 109,000 to repair that," Swan said, and staff reported the cost will be charged to the capital improvement budget allowance so the current capital program is not negatively affected.
Swan told directors the well had not had maintenance since 2012 and that the association maintains an emergency interconnection among courses to transfer water when a well fails. Board members asked whether the low yield had been tested to rule out a dry well; staff confirmed testing was performed before approving repairs and that pipe scoping occurred when the pump was removed.
Why it matters: the association operates multiple irrigation wells that support golf courses and course irrigation; failures can require emergency work and may affect operations and maintenance planning. Swan said older wells and infrastructure make some failures unpredictable but that the community budgets for eventual replacements.
