City staff on Monday described an early-stage plan to expand the Essentia Wellness Center that could double the center’s childcare capacity and add a second gym, outdoor court, dedicated senior space and additional studio space.
A city staff member told the council the project team has been working with LHB and the YMCA and that the expansion would address a local childcare shortage: “they have a waiting list of over 300. They currently can serve just over a hundred. This potential expansion could double that,” the staff member said. The same presentation estimated the project would take about two years from hiring an architect to design, build and open the expanded facility.
Why it matters: Councilors and staff framed the concept as a response to capacity constraints for families and as an opportunity to provide accessible programming for seniors who would not need Y membership. The proposal also discussed possible use of part of the footprint for school-district administrative offices.
Staff emphasized the plan is conceptual and would not proceed without identified funding. “At this point, this is a concept and couldn't be moved on until there's funding available,” the staff member said. City staff indicated this is the start of a discussion and that any formal proposal would include cost estimates and a recommended funding approach before council action.
Next steps: Staff said the project is at an initial planning stage; council did not vote on the concept and public input was not recorded for this item. If the council chooses to pursue the expansion, staff said it would return with cost estimates and a timeline for funding and design decisions.
