Kevin from Brady told the board the design phase will take about "8 to 9 months," and staff said the district is considering relocating Oakwood students so the building could be vacated at the start of a construction year and avoid mid-year disruption. The superintendent said the target for beginning some construction activity would be January 2027 if planning and permitting go on schedule.
The county commissioners had already approved the needs-based form on April 6. Board members voted to approve the grant agreement and authorized the design-phase contract; when both boards sign the agreement it will be submitted to NCDPI for state superintendent signature. Staff stressed the award lists local funding as $0 and that all project costs in early design will be charged to the grant.
Board discussion included the timeline for relocating students, the need for further clarity from the design team on scope and phasing, and attention to inflation and cost escalation if work is delayed. The board approved moving forward with the design contract so staff and the designer can finalize the scope and schedule.
