City advances pavilion schematic design; ballpark renderings, phased bidding and fundraising discussed

City staff and consultants updated the council on design progress for a new pavilion and improvements at Washington Ballpark.
Brian, the pavilion steering-committee lead, said the project has moved toward schematic design and the team will hold a community open house on Oct. 7 with follow-up engagement the week of Oct. 11. He said the team will then submit schematic materials to the State Historic Preservation Office before moving forward with construction-phase pricing.
Sean Senkll of JLG Architects said schematic design work has begun to establish the pavilion site plan, floor plan, exterior materials and structural systems; he noted geotechnical work shows poor soils on the site and that the design team is working on cost-effective structural options.
On Washington Ballpark, city staff presented 3D renderings showing a new concession stand and plaza, higher netting to protect the concessions area, improved ADA ramps and a revised grandstand layout. Staff said they intend two bid packages: a building package (grandstand, dugouts, concession stand) and a later civil package for field improvements and turf.
Kelsey reported ongoing fundraising (a mailer to about 600 addresses was sent; initial responses are small but pledges exist) and said the project may rely on a mix of community fundraising and project funding once bids or cost estimates are refined. Councilors asked about the turf package and staff said the field/turf work will be bid separately after the building components.
No final decisions were made; staff will continue community outreach, refine schematic drawings and update the council on costs and fundraising progress.
