Council issues weeklong proclamations and welcomes new city hire

The Navasota City Council used part of its April 13 meeting to present community proclamations, publicize upcoming library events and introduce a new city employee.
Mayor Bert Miller proclaimed April 19–25 as National Library Week in Navasota and outlined daily activities at the library next week, including a 40th-anniversary celebration of the current library building and a summer-reading kickoff May 21. The mayor also proclaimed April 12–18 as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week to recognize dispatchers and emergency-communications workers and proclaimed April 1–30 as Fair Housing Month, citing federal fair-housing law (Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968).
During visitors remarks, Dia Copeland of 1000 Grimes Street called attention to National Volunteer Week (April 19–25) and thanked local volunteer organizations including Planning & Zoning, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, Keep Navasota Beautiful, Lions Club, Elks Club, Grimes County Master Gardeners, Kiwanis Club and the Navasota Garden Club for scholarships and community projects.
Human Resources Director Peggy Johnson introduced Donald Nichols Jr., a Navasota native hired March 24 as a street and sanitation maintenance worker, and the council recognized Taylor Hughes as employee of the year and Tiffany Byers as citizen of the year. City staff also reminded residents that early voting by personal appearance runs April 20–28.
