St. Bernard Parish School Board outlines summer learning, STEAM and paid internships

School officials presented summer learning and remediation schedules (May 28–June 25), described STEAM and performing-arts camps, and detailed paid internship and apprenticeship opportunities for high school students.
Miss White, speaking for the district’s education staff, outlined the 2025 summer programming at the St. Bernard Parish School Board general committee meeting. The summer learning and end-of-course remediation session will run May 28 through June 25 for elementary through high school students, with elementary sessions at Davies Elementary School, middle-school activities at St. Bernard Middle, and high-school offerings at Shelman High School.
The packet provided to board members lists an Accelerated Reader program at Joseph Davies Elementary’s library that will run the same May 28–June 25 window. Officials estimated about 30 students per day will be able to use the library program. The district will again offer a four-week STEAM camp at the community center; registration hours are 8 a.m.–3 p.m., the cost is $175 per week and organizers said they have capacity for about 60 students per week.
Miss White also described a Performing Arts Academy at Shelman High School and several paid work-experience opportunities for high school students. The district’s IT internship places up to about 12 students with the St. Bernard IT department at $12 an hour; a welding internship operates in partnership with Nunez Community College; Operation Spark provides a coding program at $10 per hour; and a nursing apprenticeship selects five students who meet prerequisite coursework to participate.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the summer swim program and eligibility. Officials confirmed that district second-graders receive school-year swim lessons at no cost; the summer swim program is open to parish children entering grades 1–5 and the two-week summer session carries a $75 fee. Administrators said roughly 40 students had already registered and paid for the summer swim offering.
The district said applications for many of the programs are available online and through individual schools; academic-games dates remain undetermined pending national-competition scheduling. The packet of flyers distributed to the committee contains contact details and registration information for each program.
