Students win dozens of state awards; BPA chapter headed to nationals

School committee members recognized student achievements across several career-technical programs at the April 15 meeting, with the Business Professionals of America (BPA) chapter reporting strong state competition results and multiple CTE programs preparing for SkillsUSA state competition.
BPA advisors Jen Gaspar and Ty Panayiotou introduced chapter president Michaela Staples, who told the committee that the chapter won 12 first-place and numerous other top finishes at the state leadership competition, producing an 87.2% overall success rate and sending nearly nine out of 10 qualifying students on to nationals in Nashville. "These students are very fortunate to be able to compete ... and represent Voc-Tech on the national stage," Staples said.
Administrators and the principal also highlighted hands-on accomplishments across shops: electrical and HVAC students working on the Whitfield-Manjiro project in Fairhaven, plumbing students finishing fixtures in Mattapoisett, carpentry completing framing for a Fairhaven High School shed, robotics and engineering students preparing a 3D-printed hand and underwater rove for competition, and culinary and medical assisting students reaching state-level competitions. The principal noted the plumbing students' off-campus work had saved the district roughly $102,000 in services.
Committee members congratulated students and advisors and wished competing students success at upcoming nationals and state events.
