Committee forms subcommittee to test train‑depot connectivity; agrees to use Ted Adcock Center temporarily

The San Mateo County Agriculture Advisory Committee voted on April 13 to form a small ad hoc subcommittee to evaluate whether the historic Old Train Depot (Johnson House) is a viable long‑term meeting location and to test portable internet options.

Robbie Miller, the county planning liaison, told the committee the depot currently lacks built‑in internet and that a portable Starlink setup or other rented wireless device would be required for hybrid meetings. Members discussed costs and logistics: a community technician said a full service (deliver/setup/take‑down) could cost about $400 per meeting, while training committee members to set up the unit could reduce costs to roughly $100 for the hardware rental.

"He said it's super easy to do. I could do it for us," Marilyn Johnson said after speaking with a local technician. Committee members raised questions about insurance, equipment ownership, ADA access and whether county staff would be able to remain for the longer meeting times the depot might allow.

James O moved to form a subcommittee to meet with staff and test the depot location; the motion was seconded and passed. Marilyn Johnson agreed to chair the ad hoc subcommittee, and members volunteered to participate. The committee also agreed to use the Ted Adcock Center as an interim meeting site until the subcommittee reports back with a recommendation on internet, AV, insurance and staffing implications.

Robbie Miller and staff were directed to report the subcommittee's findings and to return an updated recommendation at the next meeting. Members also asked staff to check whether the County will approve any additional costs for Starlink rental or equipment and whether the county can provide or staff longer meeting time if the location changes.
