Committee weighs multi-year plan, FAA hurdles for new aviation mechanic program

Dr. Marlin and Dr. Malone summarized a regional subcommittee's year-long exploration that included visits to Westfield Tech, Greater Lawrence and Franklin County Tech (the latter recently received FAA certification). Administrators said the district has seen partner interest and national grant opportunities and estimated that aviation mechanics start in the range of $81,000 on average.
Staff recommended hiring a consultant with aviation program experience to produce a scope of work, identify grant opportunities, and guide FAA and DESE certification steps before the district commits to full program development. "This is probably four years out," an administrator said, noting complex certification hurdles including FAA requirements that precede state education approvals.
Superintendent Watson told the committee that FY27 budget materials include earmarked funds (a modest line item, roughly $75,000 to $75,000 cited in the packet) that could be repurposed to hire a consultant if the committee decides to proceed with deeper exploration this summer or fall. Administrators stressed the need to address space, equipment, and ongoing operational costs in addition to one-time start-up planning and certification work.
No formal decision was required at the April 15 meeting; staff said they would present an exploratory report at a forthcoming meeting (an exploratory presentation was scheduled for April 29 or 30) and that the budget includes placeholder funds so the district would be prepared to move quickly if the committee votes to pursue the next steps.
