Piscataway board thanks retiring superintendent Frank Vanelli and welcomes Dr. Johanna Roberto; routine personnel motions pass

The Piscataway Township Board of Education on March 13 publicly acknowledged Superintendent Frank Vanelli's upcoming retirement at the end of March and welcomed Dr. Johanna Roberto as an incoming administrator who will "step in" after his departure.

Vanelli, who the board credited with leading the district through the pandemic and advancing programs, responded with thanks and reflection. "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader," he said as he accepted the board's remarks and applause.

The board then moved through routine personnel and administrative business. A motion to approve personnel items A through F was presented and approved by roll call; board minutes show unanimous or majority support with a recorded abstention: Miss Cherry abstained on item B1 and item D and asked the clerk to reflect the abstention in the record. Later finance and operations motions (items A–O) were taken and carried as presented.

Administrators used the personnel-item discussion to introduce Dr. Johanna Roberto and to reiterate appreciation for Vanelli's service. The meeting recorded procedural votes approving resolutions to award contracts (for example, gym bleachers) and to move forward with capital reserve-funded projects described during the budget presentation.

What happens next: the personnel approvals and finance motions take effect as recorded; the board will continue budget deliberations with a public hearing planned for April 24. The board will also formalize the administrative transition and related onboarding steps for Dr. Roberto.
