Southampton board to ask county to review biweekly pay after staff survey

The Southampton County School Board voted April 13 to ask the Board of Supervisors to review a proposal to move the school division from a monthly to a biweekly pay schedule after hearing results from a staff survey.
Acting Superintendent Dr. Harris Muhammad and board members presented survey findings showing 291 staff responses. Survey questions included satisfaction with the current once-per-month schedule and preferences for twice-per-month pay; staff cited easier monthly budgeting and reduced financial stress among potential benefits. Dr. Harris Muhammad said many regional divisions have moved to digital payroll systems and that digitization could reduce administrative costs.
Finance staff worked with county officials and estimated the county cost to implement biweekly pay for the school division at under $40,000 per year; presenters noted that costs could fall further with increased digital payroll adoption. "We can give them the option to make it just for us or go countywide," said Mr. Grizzard as he moved the recommendation.
The board approved a motion directing Dr. Harris Muhammad to present the proposal and cost estimates to the Board of Supervisors at the upcoming budget meeting, allowing supervisors to decide whether to implement the change for the school division only or countywide. The motion passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
