Air Force JROTC recommended for Southampton County High School

The Southampton County School Board heard an update April 13 that the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) director has recommended a funded Air Force JROTC program at Southampton County High School for the 2026–27 school year.
Acting Superintendent Dr. Harris Muhammad told the board that a site survey produced “strong reviews” and that the director recommended the program open with funded support. He credited the high-school staff and Career and Technical Education supervisor Melissa Edwards for their work and said, “I’m excited. I’m excited for our kids.”
The presentation to the board included remarks that the school meets JROTC standards and that the program received positive feedback from the HQ surveyor. Board members in attendance were thanked for their support and for participating in meetings with the JROTC representatives.
No formal board vote on implementation was recorded during the update; Dr. Harris Muhammad presented the status and said the program will be available at the high school next school year pending administrative follow-up. The board did not request additional action at the meeting and moved on to other agenda items.
