Council weighs $116,000 community-center floor and asks for warranty and structural review

Council members and recreation staff reviewed two vendor proposals for resurfacing the community center gym floor: a softer surface (the higher-cost option) with a 25-year warranty and a hard interlocking sports-court product with a shorter warranty and faster installation. The higher-cost option was described by proponents as more forgiving on joints for seniors and users of pickleball and volleyball; supporters noted that the higher upfront cost can result in a lower annual cost over the expected warranty life.

Several council members raised longstanding concern about moisture coming up through the slab and the overall condition of the century-old building, noting prior core samples and that past efforts had left unresolved structural and moisture issues. One councillor urged a site tour and cautioned against investing large sums into a building they described as previously patched rather than fully repaired.

A presenter representing the flooring vendors said they could add a moisture-blocking epoxy underlayer if needed and committed to providing warranty paperwork. "I'll get the warranty paperwork and we can look at that," the presenter said in response to questions about long-term service and coverage.

Council direction: staff were asked to obtain full warranty documentation from both vendors, have engineering staff (or an independent engineer) review moisture and adhesion risks, and report back with clearer cost comparisons and maintenance expectations before any purchase decision.
