Valdez board adopts new gifted-and-talented plan to broaden identification and supports

The Valdez City School District board voted to adopt a new gifted-and-talented plan intended to make identification and services more sustainable across grades.
Superintendent Jason Weber described a months-long development process involving elementary and middle-school counselors, teachers and community members. The new plan seeks to streamline identification (reducing reliance on a single specialist for certification), create tiered support structures and better serve students who are advanced in specific areas such as math. "We wanted to do a good job and... figure out how we could make it easier to qualify kids and how we could maybe support kids who really needed support in math," Weber said.
Administrators said the plan grew out of a desire to move from an ad hoc system to a sustainable program and that they expect to revisit the plan for updates as it is implemented. The board approved the plan by voice vote; the meeting record showed unanimous recorded support.
