Council authorizes amendment to GLWA water service contract to align peak flow values

Madison Heights council on April 13 approved amendment number five to the city’s water service contract with the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) to re‑size maximum day and peak hour flow values in response to steady declines in overall water consumption.
Director of Public Services explained that reducing the contracted maximum day and peak hour volumes will help GLWA with system planning and is projected to lower commodity costs to the city in future years. Staff recommended council authorize the mayor, city manager and clerk to sign the amendment on the city’s behalf.
Council moved, supported and approved the amendment by voice vote. The city manager noted that changes to the contract would affect future years beyond the water rate adjustment already adopted for charges on or after July 1, 2026.
What this means: council authorized staff to sign the GLWA contract amendment that adjusts peak usage commitments to reflect actual and projected consumption; staff said the adjustment should better align charges with system demands and could reduce future commodity costs.
