Hoover City Schools honors support staff, social worker and student athletes at board meeting

The Hoover City Schools Board opened its regular meeting with a series of recognitions honoring support staff, school social workers and student athletes.
Mary Wilson introduced and thanked the district’s support staff of the year, calling out central-office and school-based employees whose work “makes sure that our students are fed, ready to learn” and keeps schools “clean, safe, and welcoming.” The board recognized named staff from multiple schools, including Matt Wilson (Director of Operations), registrars, secretaries, instructional aides and custodial staff across elementary, middle and high schools.
Katherine Stewart, the district’s mental health/school social work specialist, was honored as a 2025 recipient of the School Social Work Association of Alabama’s Spirit of Social Work Award for her advocacy and support for students and families.
The board also recognized student achievements: Bradley Williams (Spain Park High School) and Julie Wood (Hoover High School) were named regional winners for the Bryant-Jordan Foundation awards and received scholarships and recognition at the foundation’s banquet. The board celebrated athletic milestones — including a Bumpus wrestling team finish (second in the Metro championship, the program’s best in 27 years), a boys state runner-up finish and a girls state championship for Hoover High basketball — and music honors for Spain Park’s percussion ensemble, which was selected to perform at the 2026 AMEA Professional Development Conference.
Those recognitions preceded routine agenda items and were accompanied by brief remarks, applause and group photos. The board moved into consent and action items following the presentations.
