Portsmouth names Dr. Jeffrey Heath deputy superintendent; committee approves multiple contracts

The Portsmouth School Committee unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Jeffrey Heath as deputy superintendent and also approved several personnel contract renewals at its April 14 meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Viveiros described a national recruitment process that produced 11 applicants; two finalists advanced to final interviews on April 7. "Dr. Heath stood out for his strong commitment to the district, his connection with staff and the community, his knowledge of current RIDE regulations and practices, and his enthusiasm for the opportunity to serve," Dr. Viveiros said. The committee approved Dr. Heath’s contract unanimously; his start date was reported as July 1.
The personnel slate included contract renewals recommended by the personnel subcommittee. The committee approved a contract renewal for Melville Elementary Principal Danielle Laurie (her third contract) and a renewal for Pat Wenzel, administrative assistant to the high school principal. Both renewals were approved unanimously, 7–0.
Committee members praised the interview process and expressed confidence in the hires and renewals. Dr. Heath briefly thanked the committee and said he looked forward to collaborating across the district. The committee noted that Dr. Heath’s move will create a vacancy at the high school; administrators said they would pursue a strong candidate for that opening.
The approvals were routine personnel votes taken by the full committee; all votes on these items were unanimous.
