The University of Maine System Board of Trustees authorized two campuses to initiate the NCAA Division III application and provisional membership process.
Trustees heard short presentations from campus leaders on expected benefits including improved recruiting for student‑athletes, reduced out‑of‑state travel, better alignment with regional peers and potential financial savings from conference membership. Presidents and athletic leaders described phased plans to add or reintegrate sponsored sports so each campus meets NCAA membership requirements.
The board moved, seconded and voted to authorize the University of Maine at Augusta and the University of Maine at Fort Kent to apply to the NCAA and enter the multi‑year provisional period leading to active membership. Trustees said the decision is meant to improve the student‑athlete experience and better contain travel costs, while recognizing campuses will need to manage roster growth and program budgets.
What happens next: both campuses will submit formal NCAA applications, begin provisional procedures and report progress through the system’s athletics and governance channels.
