Wyoming County Schools honors social studies fair winners at monthly meeting

Superintendent John Henry opened the Wyoming County Schools monthly meeting by thanking families and staff and recognizing students selected as first-place winners in the district’s social studies fair. "Our kids obviously are number one, but we want to celebrate you, too," Henry said as he invited parents and grandparents to stand for recognition.
Brian Dylan, director of title programs and enrichment programs, served as master of ceremonies and called winners division by division. He said the county has a long history of participation in the fairs and noted that several students named at the meeting will advance to regional and state competitions. "This is one of the best nights that we have during the month because we get to celebrate all the kids," Dylan said.
Dylan read scores of winners across elementary, middle and high school divisions and invited board members, family and friends to come forward for photos as certificates were presented. Examples named during the program included Aubrey Hatfield (anthropology, division one), Xander Laxton (anthropology, division one), Zoe Simmons (economics, division one) and Lacy Wilson (U.S. history, division one). Dylan said certificates for students not present would be given to their principals for distribution at school.
The district’s central-office staff were introduced before the awards program: Alan Skilner (board president), Mike Pritchard (vice president), Dr. Doug Lester (board member), M. Th Kennedy (board member), Robin Hall (board member), Amy Mitchell (director of instructional resources and services), Miss Biggs (director of technology and information systems), Miss Paul (coordinator of services), Keith Stewart (assistant superintendent of support services) and Miss Car (assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction). Those names were read aloud by the superintendent as part of opening remarks.
After the presentations the board announced a roughly 10-minute recess.
The awards program highlighted student achievement and community involvement; several winners were identified as county representatives for upcoming regional and state-level competitions.
