Weston planners say code lacks guidance for EV chargers after staff denies Tesla site request
Summary
The Plan Commission discussed electric vehicle charger requests on April 13 after staff denied a proposal to place a Tesla charging station at Festival Foods (Business 51) because the proposed location did not meet accessory/principal structure setback standards; staff said they are studying how other communities regulate chargers and may bring code changes back to the commission.

On April 13 the Village of Weston Plan Commission discussed recent requests for electric-vehicle charging stations and the village’s lack of specific regulations to govern their siting.
Staff said a recent application to place a Tesla charging station in the Festival Foods parking lot (Business 51) was denied because part of the proposed installation would have fallen within required principal-structure setback areas and even encroached into the drive lane and right-of-way. Staff explained the village’s zoning code currently lacks special provisions for chargers (some communities allow charging stations in street-facing or more flexible locations), and said they have been researching other municipalities’ approaches and may return with draft regulations.
Commissioners discussed alternative sites, including a now-vacant former restaurant lot closer to the highway, and noted right-of-way and an upcoming highway project could affect feasibility. Staff also reported they are receiving multiple inquiries from private companies (including Amazon and others) seeking guidance on charger siting. The issue is on the commission’s future agenda for deeper discussion of regulations and possible text amendments to the zoning code.
