Prince William County School Board certifies closed session, approves personnel actions and consent items

The Prince William County School Board voted Thursday to certify a closed session and to approve personnel appointments and a consent agenda after returning to open session.

After an initial voice vote to enter closed session to discuss personnel matters, probable litigation and school facility security under Virginia Code Sections 2.2-3711 and 2.2-3712, the board returned to open session and adopted a certification resolution "that to the best of each member's knowledge" only lawfully exempted matters were discussed and only items identified in the motion were considered. The certification passed by a unanimous voice vote.

Vice Chair Richard Jessie moved the certification resolution; the clerk recorded a unanimous seven yes votes. The board then approved the appointments and releases of specified employees as presented in closed session; that motion also passed unanimously.

Earlier in the meeting the board had moved and approved the meeting agenda, and later adopted the consent agenda and a slate of monthly acknowledgements — including recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Teacher Appreciation, National School Nurse Day and other observances — each by recorded unanimous voice votes.

The meeting minutes record the closed‑session motion citing Virginia Code §§2.2‑3711(A)(1), (A)(7), (A)(8) and (A)(19) for personnel, probable litigation/collective bargaining, and security briefings. The clerk documented vote tallies on motions: the agenda approval was recorded as six yes and one not present; the motion to enter closed session was recorded as five yes with two not present; subsequent certification, personnel approvals and consent items were recorded as unanimous (seven yes).
