Franklin High officials report early wins from WIN block, begin multi-year grading overhaul

Principal Maria Weaver said the school is seeing encouraging operational results: "At this point our grade trend data remains inconclusive," she told the committee, while noting other early indicators look positive. Weaver said the school tracked a drop in after‑school Academic Learning Center (ALC) attendance from about 1,200 students last year to under 700 this year, and reported decreases in discipline incidents tied to WIN block scheduling and supports.
Weaver also outlined a three‑year initiative to calibrate grading practices across departments. Year one consisted of a schoolwide audit of grading structures, policies and beliefs with 100% staff participation in discussions and surveys. The administration identified four focus areas—gradebook structure, homework policy, retake policy and late‑work policy—and plans department‑specific recommendations for implementation in year two.
The committee asked administrators to bring clearer metrics and recommended next steps following the year‑end administrative debrief. Weaver said the planning cadence includes summer work and an August administrative retreat to prepare year‑two implementation.
