The City Council reviewed three finalist proposals for a mural inside the Spanish Park Learning Center at its April 14 meeting but postponed a final selection to allow additional community input and artist revisions.
Planning staff described the Public Art Advisory Committee’s process and introduced three finalists: Brenda Cebrian; Stephanie (two concept options); and Eric Michael. Each proposal emphasized community value and outreach; examples included student mentorship and participation plans.
Council members questioned the level of community engagement in the initial submissions and asked staff to involve regular users of the learning center and representatives from local stakeholder groups when directing artists on revisions. Planning director John King told the council the finalists would be asked to return with updated concepts that reflect the community feedback and committee guidance.
Councilmembers indicated they were comfortable leaving the final selection to a narrowed committee process that includes representatives of the people who use the room most often, rather than making the decision immediately at the dais. The item is continued for later consideration after the artists submit revised proposals and staff vets them with the advisory committee and community representatives.
