Waite Park City Council members postponed a proposed change to the fire chief job description after members split on whether to lower the education requirement from a bachelor’s degree to an associate degree.
Council member Sarah moved to approve the job description with the change to an associate degree; the motion attracted objections from colleagues who said the position is “very technical” and likely requires higher qualifications. Council discussion included concerns that an associate degree might not attract candidates with the technical background the city needs and counterarguments that lowering the threshold could broaden the applicant pool and bring “new blood” to planning and community engagement.
No final vote on the substantive change occurred. Members recorded that the matter resulted in a tied position among those present and agreed to table the item until Frank is available to attend. The council directed staff to bring the revised job description back for consideration at the Feb. 17, 2026 meeting.
The action is procedural: no policy was adopted and no hiring decision was made. The council left the existing posting and requirements unchanged pending the next meeting.
