Ashley Williams, a tenant at 505 Lincolnway Suite B, told the board she is a nationally board-certified massage therapist since 2004 and licensed by the state of Indiana since 2019 and asked for the variance so she could operate a second location downtown.
City planning staff (David) told the board the site sits in the Central Business District 1, where massage therapy is not an allowed use, but recommended approval of use variance petition 26-01. In the staff report, David said approval met the variance criteria because similar health and fitness uses already exist within the same building and in downtown La Porte and the proposed use would be complementary to those businesses.
A board member moved to approve the variance and Vicky Gushrowski seconded. The board voted in favor and the motion passed.
The approval allows Williams to operate a massage therapy establishment in the upper story of the Go Aerial Fitness building at 505 Lincolnway. The board did not record conditions attached to the approval in the public transcript. Staff said it would answer questions from the petitioner about next steps.
The board proceeded to the next agenda item after the vote.
