Jordan board approves calendar options for public survey and amends 2026–27 draft to comply with SB58

The Jordan School District Calendar Committee presented three draft 2027–28 calendars — an early‑spring recess option, a late‑spring recess option and a December semester‑change option — and the board approved sending two options to public survey while reserving the third pending a staff check for conflicts with certification/seat‑time requirements.

Committee chair Mr. Olsen explained tradeoffs: balanced semesters, the placement of winter and spring recess, AP testing windows and the need to avoid fragmented single‑day holidays that complicate family planning. "There are lots of ways to make calendars. There are not a lot of ways we can make calendars that everyone is going to like," Mr. Olsen told members.

The board voted unanimously to authorize options one and two for public survey and to include option three only if staff can confirm it will not critically interfere with class seat‑time requirements or credentialing schedules.

Separately staff explained a statutory change (SB58) that tightened the definition of an instructional day; to comply the district proposed moving a scheduled professional‑development day into the district’s health & wellness day allocation for the 2026–27 calendar. The board approved the 2026–27 calendar amendment to be formally adopted at the April 28 business meeting, a date staff said was needed to meet the state’s >90‑day public‑notice requirement.

What happens next: The calendar committee will run the public survey and return results on April 28 along with the staff confirmation about option three’s certifications/seat‑time impact; the board will consider formal approval at the next business meeting.
