Parent advisor praises PCPS family engagement; board approves proclamations and recognitions

During the public-comment period, Lkesha Tinsley of Ward Five, chair of the Parent Advisory Committee, praised Petersburg City Public Schools' family engagement work after attending a recent conference. "Family engagement is not an event; it's a system that drives impact," Tinsley said, singling out Dr. Brandy Lee, Ebony Patterson and Crystal McDaniel for their work in expanding family engagement and launching a "family engagement university." She urged deeper connection beyond communication so families feel "seen, valued, connected to student success."
On consent items and recognitions, the board approved proclamations presented by the superintendent, including a National Assistant Principals Week proclamation (April 6—10, 2026), recognition of VSBA Workforce Readiness Month, Administrative Professionals Day (April 22, 2026) and National Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month (April 2026). Superintendent Brown also highlighted students and staff: Isaac Forest, a 10th grader at Petersburg High School, won third place in the VSBA Southside Regional Art Contest; several IT staff received regional awards; and the division recently partnered in a community housing resource fair supporting McKinney-Vento students and a wellness and resource fair with the Crater Health District. Brown noted the renewal of an instructional learning platform subscription for $55,312.50 for the 2026—7 school year as an information item.
Board members asked staff to bring student recognitions (including Lego teams and art winners) to the May meeting. The meeting closed with routine announcements about a community lock-in mentoring event and other upcoming activities.
