A Riverside County Office of Education coordinator told the Perris Union High School District board on Feb. 12 that community schools are a hub model that integrates student supports, family engagement, extended learning and collaborative leadership.
Amanda Wade, the county’s Community Schools coordinator, summarized the program framework and said districts use a locally tailored approach; she told the board the Perris Union award is about $7.3 million to be spent over roughly five years to staff community-school coordinators, counseling and other site-based supports. Wade explained the grant’s four pillars, capacity-building supports and the annual and end-of-project reporting schedule the district will follow.
District staff said four Perris Union campuses were selected for Community Schools implementation and that the district will provide similar resources across other campuses where possible. Trustees asked practical questions about budget allocation, how social workers and other hires would be funded and how the district will sustain services when grants expire. County and district staff said the grant was written with a proposed budget and that some staffing was already being placed at sites; staff committed to bringing budget breakdowns back to the board.
The presentation was informational; the board did not take a final funding vote at the meeting.
