Gina, the Doña Ana County assessor, announced a Veteran Exemption Clinic on Thursday, April 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Assessor's Office Conference Room to help veterans secure property tax exemption certificates.
The clinic will be staffed by the Assessor's Office with representatives from the Department of Veteran Services, Gina said. The certificates provided at the event are the documents veterans must file with the Assessor’s Office to claim the local exemptions.
Gina said veterans who were honorably discharged are eligible for a $10,000 exemption off their property taxes. She added that veterans with a service-connected disability, including those who are 100% disabled, are entitled to a separate exemption based on disability percentage.
Attendees should bring specific documents to the clinic: a copy of the DD-214, a VA federal award letter verifying any service-connected disability if applicable, and proof of residency, Gina said. She also noted that veterans who already have their exemption certificates filed with the Assessor’s Office — such as the $10,000 exemption certificate or a percentage-disability certificate — do not need to attend again.
The Assessor’s Office will host the event in its conference room with Department of Veteran Services staff on site to issue the certificates needed to claim the exemptions. Veterans with additional questions were directed to contact the Assessor’s Office.
