Discovery Elementary showcases family engagement, small-group instruction at Lancaster board meeting

The principal told trustees that Discovery's mission is "that each and every student will be able to learn in a safe Equitable and rigorous environment that Embraces diversity." She said the school's SIP focuses on three goals — academics, equitable learning practices and safe, supportive environments — and that family and community engagement has been intentionally integrated into those goals rather than treated as a separate fourth priority.
The presentation described classroom structures used to meet those goals: professional learning communities (PLCs), data-driven "walk to learn" small-group instruction and cooperative-learning routines that let teachers observe student discourse and provide targeted feedback. The team said first-grade instruction uses systematic phonics and placement assessments to form groups, and that teachers adjust instruction based on frequent formative checks.
Parent volunteer Classy Gray praised the school's staff and safety protocols: "One thing that I do love about Discovery Elementary School is Dr Loos Mr Hera and all of the teachers on the team ' they're very friendly ' they're very sincere ' they're very concerned with their students and their safety as their number one priority," she said.
Presenters also described family-facing workshops (teacher clarity, success criteria, and strategies to support learning at home) and a growing set of clubs and activities'including 3D printing, art and reading clubs'that staff said are intended to improve attendance and provide positive outlets for students. Trustees responded positively to the demonstration and the student performers, and the board thanked Discovery staff and parents for the presentation.
The meeting record shows trustees moved on to other agenda items after the presentation; no formal board directive or funding decision related specifically to Discovery's SIP was recorded during this portion of the meeting.
