Board hears proposals to shorten ELD summer camp, summer ESY plans and transportation updates

Curriculum staff proposed converting the district’s English Language Development (ELD) summer camp from a three‑week format to a one‑week model this summer to reduce the time commitment for families and potentially increase participation. Dr. Rackley said the program would continue to use existing content, be aimed at K–11 students, run 9 a.m.–1:30 p.m. at Union Canal Elementary, include two buses for transportation and breakfast and lunch, and target roughly 60 students. The ELD change is scheduled for the board calendar on April 20 for approval.
Extended School Year: Dr. Long outlined ESY services for students with qualifying IEPs to run July 6–30 (Mondays–Thursdays) at South Lebanon Elementary, serving an estimated 100 students in grouped classes; many students attend multiple weeks and staff will attempt to keep students with the same teachers where feasible.
Operations: administrators reported printing‑contract quotes for the 2026–27 district calendar are due April 17 and a recommendation will follow. Food service staff said year‑to‑date the food fund shows approximately $108,500 net and revenue was up about 9% compared with last year, while expenditures were up about 3%. Transportation staff reviewed fleet scope (35 buses, nine micro buses, 21 vans, ~3,800 stops daily) and said two additional buses will be added for 2026–27 to ease crowding at Cornwall Elementary and South Lebanon Elementary.
Next steps: the board will consider ELD camp changes, ESY staffing, calendar printing contracts, and transportation driver approvals at the April 20 meeting; administrators said they have already solicited quotes and are preparing motions for next week.
