Atascadero — City Manager Lewis used the council meeting to lay out event dates and a schedule for the city’s general plan process, and council members paused to honor the life of Lon Allen, a longtime editor and community historian.
Lewis announced several upcoming events: "Coffee with the Planner" at Amsterdam Coffee on April 16 to discuss zoning and the general plan; the 15th annual Party for the Planet at the zoo on April 18; a citywide yard sale on April 18–19; a free waste drop-off, shredding and compost giveaway April 18–25; the Central Coast Cider Festival on April 25; and a Tamale Festival weekend on May 1–2. He also said youth volleyball registration is open, the zoo will open a new lemur habitat May 15, and the city will hold a ribbon-cutting April 28 for a monarch and pollinator habitat near the 101/Highway 41 off-ramp.
On planning, Lewis told the council the city is pacing general-plan discussions to the second meeting of each month. He said the draft environmental impact report (EIR) will be circulated next month, followed by a fiscal analysis in early June and further EIR consideration at the end of June, adding, "we're on track to have the general plan and zoning code all buttoned up by September."
Mayor Barba announced the death of Lon Allen, describing him as a longtime editor of the Atascadero News and the community historian; Council Member Peak added that Allen was instrumental in civic events such as rebuilding the bandstand and coordinating the wine-makers dinner. Council members offered condolences and held a brief moment of recognition.
The council also noted that Mayor Pro Tem Dares and the mayor will attend the League of California Cities city leaders summit in Sacramento to meet with legislators and advocate on the city’s behalf.
