According to the briefing the chair read, Waukegan initially opted out of a 2022 Monsanto class settlement intending to pursue separate litigation but later withdrew that opt-out. The city received a settlement check in April 2023 for $1,724,000 "and change;" the briefing noted that the city's share had been expected to be about $1.44 million but rose to roughly $1.7 million after several large municipalities opted out of the class settlement.
The chair also reported the city's 3M-related case totaled about $2.7 million, with approximately $442,000 still unpaid. "So we have collected over $2 million in payment for these PCB ... settlements," the chair said.
