Curt Tiffin Brown, a resident, told the commission he cherished a personal memory of Matera and thanked her for her service. “Nancy was a very shining, bright beacon of light for our city,” he said, describing her as a steady presence who made people feel seen.
Antoine Dumas recalled how Matera gave his daughter a personal tour of City Hall and encouraged her to “dream big,” calling the memory transformative. “You made it real for her,” Dumas said.
Commissioner Sarah read a remembrance and recited the poem “The Dash” by Linda Ellis, framing Matera’s public service as a lasting legacy. “Nancy had one hell of a dash,” she said, urging the commission and community to honor Matera’s work through continued civic engagement.
City Manager Gibbons asked residents to observe a moment of silence and announced that U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz would deliver a brief remembrance on the congressional floor at 10 a.m. on April 15. Gibbons also invited the public to several upcoming events — including a citywide clean-up, Earth Fest, a community concert and a Turtle Run Park ribbon cutting — as part of efforts to celebrate Matera’s life and civic contributions.
Speakers throughout the meeting urged unity and continued commitment to the priorities Matera championed, including sustainability, mentoring and inclusion. The commission said it will discuss succession matters for the vacant seat at a retreat next week.
The meeting continued with the regular agenda after public comment closed.
