The Crookston City Council approved a $30,000 marketing engagement Nov. 16 to develop a strategic communications plan and refreshed branding for the city, staff said.
Staff described the work as twofold: (1) produce a strategic communications plan after research into resident preferences and (2) develop a refreshed brand—logo, tagline, positioning statements, graphics and web materials—alongside paid and earned media recommendations. The marketing coordinator told council the firm proposed community engagement steps so residents would shape the outcome.
The coordinator said the project would draw on the community development budget for printing and advertising; the proposal cost of $30,000 would not require tapping city reserves. Council members raised questions about ensuring local input and staff involvement; the coordinator and EDA representatives said city staff and community stakeholders would be closely involved throughout the process.
After discussion the council approved the resolution to move forward; the clerk recorded the roll call and said the motion carried.
Staff said next steps include refining the scope with the selected firm, scheduling community engagement sessions and returning to council with an implementation plan and budget details for paid media.
