Freedom Middle School project moves from permits to foundation work with summer move‑in target

The board received an update on the Freedom Middle School construction project from architect Ed Gordon and district construction staff.

Gordon said the early delay to secure building permits produced a benefit: county and city inspectors are now engaged in reviewing both the building and property. He described current activity as largely underground—footings, piping and utilities—so there is little visible above grade work, but staff expect footings and foundations to be complete in the coming weeks.

Project benchmarks presented to the board include completion of footings and foundations by mid‑June, structural masonry by August, steel erection through October and a targeted move‑in at the end of July; teachers would occupy the building in early August if inspections and the schedule hold. District staff reviewed recent site progress—storm drain piping, formed building pads and inspected hydrants—and said the next 30 days will focus on grading, the fire lane and additional footings.

Board members discussed logistics such as gym floors, scoreboards, furniture procurement and reusing classroom technology from other district sites to reduce costs. The district described an allowance for unforeseen conditions in the construction contract and said change orders are anticipated only for discovered site surprises.

The presentation concluded with an offer to bring the board on site as the building is enclosed to view progress and to continue monthly updates to the board.
