County engineer: DOT bridge removal agreement will credit Mills County $2 million for bridge replacements

County Engineer Jake told the Mills County Board the county received a proposed bridge removal mitigation agreement from the Iowa Department of Transportation that the board will be asked to approve next week.
Under the agreement the DOT would remove the bridge approaches and return the right-of-way to Mills County, and the county would receive a one-time $2 million credit to its Highway Bridge Program (HBP) fund to use on replacement projects. The engineer said the DOT will remove approaches to existing grade and that the county would retain ownership and maintenance responsibility of the affected roadway sections after removal.
"We will be receiving the one time fund of $2 million credit to our HBP fund which is our highway bridge program fund that is managed by the state that we get to use for replacement," the county engineer said. He said he will bring the agreement to the board for formal approval at the next meeting and invited questions when the item is presented.
The board did not vote on the agreement during the session; the engineer noted he would present the full agreement and answer questions at the next meeting.
