The Clarksburg City Council opened its April 16 meeting with awards and proclamations recognizing public service and community institutions.
Mayor Malfet and Chief Kitty presented life‑saving awards to Sergeant Cameron Styers of the Parks Police Department and Sergeant McLung of the Clark Police Department for separate incidents in late 2025 in which each officer helped rescue people from life‑threatening situations. The council read citations describing Styers’ December 4 response to a resident attempting self‑harm and McLung’s November 28 actions at a house fire that helped evacuate occupants and pets.
The council also issued a proclamation honoring Paul F. McHugh, a lifelong Clarksburg resident and World War II Navy veteran, designating May 2, 2026, as Paul McHugh World War II Hero Day. Speaking after the proclamation, Paul McHugh, a retired U.S. Army sergeant, thanked the council and reflected on his service: "I'm a retired US Army sergeant of 25 years service...and as you can see, I can still fit in my uniform with some difficulty." The proclamation cites McHugh’s civic work, including veterans’ education and efforts to remember the Worth 11.
Vice Mayor Riffle read a proclamation declaring April 19–25 National Library Week and recognized the Hsburg Harrison Public Library’s contribution to literacy and community programming. The library representative thanked the council for continued funding, noted forthcoming dedicated funding for next year and introduced new branch manager Ebony Miguel and assistant director Kelly.
The proclamations and awards were presented early in the meeting; no formal council action was required for these recognitions.
The council then moved on to other agenda items, including public comments and new business.
